Mission Trip Opportunities

The Opticians Association of Washington would like to provide information on upcoming mission trip opportunities offered to optometrists, opticians, and other like-minded volunteers from all over the country.

Lillian Pravda is requesting volunteers for an upcoming eye care mission in Arizona.

Lillian Pravda is requesting volunteers for an upcoming eye care mission. The event is taking place in Arizona on a Navajo reservation on April 13th and/or 14th. There are already more than 200 children signed up for care. Everything has been arranged including the mobile clinics, which have all the equipment for screenings and to make the glasses on the spot. Everything is free for the patients and families. Lillian was there and saw how desperate these children and families are for care.

The event is about providing “vision” in the literal and figurative senses- “vision” for the young patients through the free care and free eyeglasses as well as “vision” for the young volunteers who will be helping with the event.

The issue now is that the doctors who were supposed to be examining the patients are not available, and it would be so sad to have to cancel and not provide care for all of these children.

Please know that all of the expenses will be paid (travel, food, hotel, and anything else). Contact Lillian for more details: lillian.pravda@gmail.com

Mission Opportunities in Mexico for Opticians

Mission groups composed of optometrists, opticians and lay volunteers visit the Guerrero Clinic (http://www.guerreroclinic.org/home.html) near Chihuahua, Mexico, four to five times per year. This clinic is sponsored by the Rotary Club and VOSH Int’l and provides eye care, treatment, eyeglasses, dental and other medical care to those in need. Eye care, treatment and refractions are provided. Glasses are dispensed and both new and used eyeglasses are utilized, and some edging is done on site. So there are a wide variety of opportunities for an optician. Travel is by van (from Houston) or plane and the clinic will work with any opticians that wish to accompany the group to find some financial support. Please contact Walter Branson, Guerrero Clinic director, if interested:Walter@GuerreroClinic.org
